Present simple or continuous
Learn when to choose the present simple over the present continuous, and avoid common mix-ups.
1. Overview
2. How to choose the correct tense
Use the Present Simple when the action:
- happens regularly or is repeated;
- expresses a fact or general truth;
- describes a stable situation;
- is part of a fixed timetable or schedule.
Use the Present Continuous when the action:
- is happening now or around now;
- describes a temporary situation;
- shows a change or trend;
- expresses an arranged future plan.
| Present Simple | Present Continuous |
|---|---|
| routine or repetition | action in progress |
| stable situation | temporary situation |
| general fact | change or trend |
| fixed timetable | arranged personal plan |
3. Main contrasts
3.1. Routine versus action happening now

-
Leo is playing tennis now. — He is playing at the moment.
-

With the Present Simple, always describes frequency neutrally:

With the Present Continuous, always can express irritation, surprise or criticism:
- Tom is always losing his keys!
4. Time markers
Time markers help, but they do not replace the meaning of the sentence.

|---|---|
| always, usually, often, sometimes, never | now, right now, at the moment |
| every day, once a week, on Mondays | today, this week, this month |
| normally, generally | currently, these days |
Be careful: an expression does not automatically determine the tense.

- I’m working this Saturday. — A temporary arrangement for a specific Saturday.
- She always helps me. — A neutral or positive comment.
- She’s always interrupting me! — A complaint.

Some of the most common ones are know, understand, believe, remember, want, need, prefer, love, hate, own, belong and seem.
